February 1, 2016 $375.00

Me’ah Select is an opportunity to enroll in a 10-session class focused on particular themes, texts and personalities in history. The class will be taught by Dr. Nehemia Polen, beginning on February 1, 2016 at Young Israel of Brookline.
Mondays, 7-9:30 p.m.
“Hasidic Transformations of Judaism “:
Hasidism is a movement of spiritual and social renewal that transformed Eastern-European Jewish society from the eighteenth century on, and whose influence continues to reverberate in new locations and unexpected ways. We will introduce its spiritually powerful masters such as the Baal Shem Tov and the Maggid of Mezirech and their disciples, and will study Hasidism’s teachings, tales, melodies, modes of dress and prayer, and other aspects of its distinctive and sometimes controversial culture. We will look at the figure of the tsaddik—the spiritual center of the community believed by Hasidim to connect heaven and earth, and the dynasties formed around these personalities. We will examine the impact of historical events on Hasidism, especially the devastation of the Holocaust and the remarkable postwar revival. We will examine Hasidism’s spiritual legacy—its emphasis on joy, empowerment, and the omnipresence of God, and will discuss problems and prospects within the Hasidic world today.
