Honoree Marion Green is a tireless advocate for individuals with special needs. She was a founding member of Etgar L’Noar, served on its Executive Board, chaired its education committee, and was instrumental in founding Gateways and its B’nei Mitzvah program. Marion has made a multitude of important contributions to Gateways since its inception, but the most notable of these is the structured, multi-sensory mnemonics program she designed to enable learners of all abilities to read Hebrew text and prayers. Students who participate in the program access the Hebrew alphabet by utilizing visual supports, manipulatives, colors, sounds, and movement.

Marion mentors the tutors in the Gateways B’nei Mitzvah program and acts as advisor to high school volunteers who use her mnemonics system in Gateways’ Sunday program. Her work has helped over 70 Gateways students successfully read and chant from the Torah for their b’nei mitzvah. Marion has also taught self-contained classes and supervised the Hebrew Reading Program in congregational schools. She has worked closely with day school teachers on adapting curricula for students with special needs in Judaics, and at Hebrew College she has co-taught a b’nei mitzvah course and classes on the modification of curricula for students with special needs. Marion holds a BA in Psychology, an MA in Special Education from Boston University, and is an alumna of the high school of Yeshivah of Flatbush.
