Indiana Jones had nothing on Fanny and Simon Kaplan.

In the early years of the 20th century, Hermann Cohen was the most prominent Jewish philosopher in Germany. His classic work, “Religion of Reason: Out of the Sources of Judaism,” first published in German in 1919, is virtually unknown today despite being one of the great treasures of Jewish philosophy.

That his work is available at all is due to the efforts of Fanny and Simon Kaplan, whose real-life adventures (involving Russian revolutionaries and Nazis) bringing Cohen’s work to America sound like something that could have happened to Indiana Jones.

This is their story, as presented by Avi Bernstein-Nahar, founder and president of The New Jewish Academy, a center for teacher, training and human sciences research, chief education officer for 36 Learning Matters, and visiting scholar in Near Eastern and Judaic studies at Brandeis University.

The evening will feature a brief reception followed by lecture and discussion.
