The Journey From Ethiopia to Jerusalem: Dreams and Realities

Top Pick June 29, 2017 Lexington Free
Dr Sharon Shalom

Everyone is invited to join us at Temple Emunah in Lexington immediately following Evening Minyan at 7:30 p.m. for a talk and discussion with Dr. Sharon Shalom.

Rabbi Dr. Sharon Zaude Shalom is a Visiting Scholar at Brandeis University’s Schusterman Center for Israel Studies. Born Zaude Tesfay in an Ethiopian village, Shalom emigrated to Israel as an 8-year-old in a rescue mission by the Mossad and the Jewish Agency, following two years in the Tawa refugee camp in Sudan. As a young Ethiopian immigrant in Israel, he struggled with questions of identity and his place in Israeli society. Those questions have influenced his scholarship and teaching. Today, Shalom holds a doctorate in Jewish philosophy from Bar-Ilan University and is a lecturer at Bar-Ilan and Tel Aviv Universities. In addition to his academic positions, Shalom also serves as a rabbi of Kedoshei Yisrael, a community in Kiryat Gat established by Holocaust survivors.

The evening will include a discussion of the Jewish immigrant experience in Israel, the U.S. and beyond, so come with your questions and personal stories! This event is co-sponsored by Temple Emunah’s Israel Committee and Combined Jewish Philanthropies’ Boston Haifa Connection, and light refreshments will be served.
