Shavuot is the commemoration of the Israelites receiving the Torah. Based on the legend that the heavens will open on Shavuot, the tradition is to stay up and study the night away in the hopes of seeing this divine sight.

We’ll start at 11:30 p.m. with Ma’ariv, the evening service, followed by four classes. This year, Josh Schreiber Shalem is teaching “Do You Like Suffering?,” a Talmudic exploration of the relationship between healing, the healer and the healed. Aliza Arzt is teaching “The Word ‘Nechemata’ in Kaddish.” What is “consolation” doing in the middle of a list of praise and blessing? Joel Rosenberg will teach a piece by Levi Yitzhak of Berditchev about “being and nothingness” (Yesh ve-‘Ayin). And Inna Lynn will offer a surprise topic.

The culmination of the night is the morning davening on Sunday, which includes the regular service, the reading of the Ten Commandments and Yizkor, the memorial service.

By 7 a.m., we’re heading for breakfast and a well-deserved rest. Please come and join us, for all or for any part!
