Join Rabbi Louis Polisson in discovering the meaning and power of Jewish prayer and how prayer might be meaningful for us in our all-too-modern world in 2018.

We’ll also consider various Jewish approaches to prayer, from biblical and early rabbinic sources to Kabbalistic and Hasidic texts to modern philosophical and theological perspectives (including at least one atheist perspective!). We’ll also learn about the history, structure and content of Jewish prayer, focusing on the Shabbat morning liturgy, and in the final few sessions the class will take a deeper dive into the meaning of specific excerpts from the siddur, or prayerbook.

This course will incorporate experiential elements and will cultivate spirituality, which you’ll be able to bring into your practice of prayer on Shabbat! No previous knowledge of Hebrew is required for this course, though you just might learn a Hebrew word or two by joining us. Learners of all backgrounds, all levels of Jewish education (including none at all) and all levels of familiarity or comfort with traditional Jewish prayer services (including none) are welcome and invited.

Course dates: 11/15, 11/29, 12/6, 12/13 and 12/20.
