Join us for this presentation by photographer and physicist Stephen Somerstein, who participated in and documented the civil rights movement. Somerstein’s talk will focus on the Selma to Montgomery civil rights march, where he captured civil rights leaders, including MLK, marchers, onlookers, police and more.

“There was a genial, upbeat, civil and patriotic spirit [on the march] that recognized that though most eligible Black Alabamians had been denied their right to vote, America, as led by President Johnson, could steer Congress to pass the vital voting rights legislation,” he recalls of the experience. “I set out to capture that spirit, energy and drive, but also the images of the older and especially the younger generations that would benefit from that enfranchisement.”
