Right now it’s summer. You may be enjoying refreshing iced beverages somewhere by a pool (where? And, can we come too?)—but there are still mosquitos, air quality advisories, heat waves, a never-ending coastal flood warning, and national and international political madness to think about. What better time to take a moment and prepare for the upcoming Jewish holidays?

Luckily, we have the Hebrew month of Elul—that oft-overlooked period of spiritual self-reflection leading up to the chagim. This year, let’s take a breath and do a little learning. After all, we’re not the first Jewish people to live through wild times.

A small group of us will meet over the next few weeks to explore ideas, texts, and wisdom from Jewish tradition for this season. This will be a space for us to ask big questions.

The wisdom found in Jewish texts—both ancient and contemporary—can be surprising, complicated, delightful, weird, mysterious, perplexing, and fun. We read these texts broadly and generously, and we will count on everyone to add their unique voices and perspectives to our conversations.

So, what will we talk about?

In short, we’ll reflect on the big questions at the heart of the fall holidays:

  • Week 1: Rosh Hashanah: Learning to Listen, Learning to Cry
  • Week 2: Yom Kippur: Teshuva and Reinventing Ourselves
  • Week 3: Sukkot: Vulnerability and Impermanence

Check out the syllabus, or email Nalani with any question!

This event and the Riverway Project community are open to all in their 20s and 30s.
