A Tree with Roots’ annual “Spiritual Preparation for the Days of Awe” series returns in anticipation of Rosh HaShanah 5787!

The story of Hannah (1 Samuel, chapters 1-2) has been linked with Rosh HaShanah since at least the days of the Talmud, and it’s a favorite of many people. Who hasn’t been moved by the image of Hannah, in all her vulnerability, praying as “her lips moved, but her voice could not be heard”? Who hasn’t been infuriated by Eli the Priest, who presumes that she’s drunk in the Temple rather than sincere in her prayer? And yet the story raises many questions.

Most importantly: What does this passage have to do with Rosh HaShanah? Why did the ancient rabbis assign it as the morning’s Haftarah? And in what ways did they determine that Hannah should be a role model for us all?

We’ll take a deep dive into this great passage, exploring its context and its meaning in midrash and commentaries both ancient and modern. And always we’ll have our eye on the question: How does this story elevate our spiritual awareness at the most powerful season of the year?
