“Hyman Bloom: The Beauty of All Things” (Film still)

Explore the history and life of former West Ender and Vilna Shul congregant and painter Hyman Bloom, and hear never-before-told stories from his widow, Stella Bloom.

Bloom is one of the forefathers of abstract art in America. This film highlights the vibrant manifestation of Bloom’s imagination and his dedication to envision what others didn’t dare. He painted rabbis and Christmas trees, cadavers and autopsies, séances and the astral plane, the woods of Maine and the shimmer of opalescent pottery. Told with humor and irony, Bloom’s story is not a bitter one. It is a triumph of art and of the spirit.

Screening followed by a conversation with Bloom’s widow, Stella Bloom, film writer/director Angélica Allende Brisk and Erica E. Hirshler, senior curator of American paintings/organizer of the current Hyman Bloom exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts.
