Temple Emanu-El of Haverhill will hold its annual Shabbat service honoring the late Rev. Doctor Martin Luther King Jr.

“Love is the most durable power in the world” (King, 1957).

Indomitable, powerful love animated the life and work of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: love of humanity, love of God and love of the peace that is “the presence of justice” (1955). Fifty years after his assassination, we turn to Dr. King’s words and acts for inspiration to active love, and find them bright and beckoning as stars in darkness.

Our service in tribute to Dr. King, a joyful musical celebration of freedom and faith, is presented by Temple Emanu-El in partnership with the Calvary Baptist Church, Haverhill and officiated by members of the Greater Haverhill Clergy Association. This year, our service coincides with Shabbat Shira, on which Jews read the “Song of the Sea” from the Torah and musically rejoice in the liberation of the children of Israel from the confines of slavery and oppression. Love of freedom knows no denomination, and we’ll sing it out together.

The service will follow the weekly Sabbath liturgy and will include selected readings from the writings of Dr. King. Cantor Vera Broekhuysen and Rabbinic Intern Mona Strick, both of Temple Emanu-El, will conduct the service; members of the Greater Haverhill Clergy Association will also participate. The Temple Emanu-El Choir, conducted by Cantor Broekhuysen, the Calvary Baptist Church Sanctuary Choir, under the direction of music minister Joe DeVoe and the Bradford Christian Academy High School Choir, under the direction of Gina McKeown, will present musical selections together in celebration of the great civil rights leader.

The service will be followed by an Oneg Shabbat (social hour). Everyone in the community is invited to attend.
