This methodological class will outline three avenues for reading Tanakh: Hazal’s typological reading, the medievalist (Rashi, Ibn Ezra, Rashbam, Ramban) pshat approach, and the new literary approach. We shall learn much about how to read Tanakh, but also study the famous story of Jacob’s deception of his father.

This will be a “beit midrash” style class. It will include a “chevruta” component in which students will have the opportunity to grapple with the sources on their own or with a partner. It is intended to be accessible to students of all levels.

Rabbi Alex Israel teaches at Yeshivat Eretz Hatzvi and at the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies where he serves as Director of Community Education and the Summer Program. He is a popular lecturer at campuses and communities on three continents. In 2013, he published his first book: I Kings: Torn in Two”  a commentary to Sefer Melakhim. Rabbi Israel earned his rabbinic ordination from the Israeli Chief Rabbinate following several years of study at Yeshivat Har Etzion. He holds degrees from London School of Economics, the Institute of Education, London, and Bar Ilan University. He lives in Alon Shvut with his wife Aliza and their four wonderful children.
