The religious life of immigrant American Jews at the turn of the 20th century was in part transplanted from Eastern Europe, while some fascinating new religious phenomena emerged in the American context. Dr. Dan Judson describes trends such as “mushroom synagogues” popping up for the High Holidays, the “chazan craze” in which some cantors attracted top entertainment salaries, and the spin-off congregations from Stephen Wise’s “free synagogue.”
This lecture will describe all of these trends and place the religious life of Jews within the broader context of the development of American Judaism.
Dr. Dan Judson is the dean of the Hebrew College Rabbinical School. His book, “Pennies for Heaven: The History of American Synagogues and Money,” was a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award. While his research has been featured in major publications such as The New York Times, The Boston Globe and Ha’aretz, he is also a professional storyteller, appearing on the national MOTH radio hour, and has been a scholar-in-residence across the country.
