What happens when love, tradition, and the supernatural collide?

Explore the mystical and dramatic world of Yiddish folklore through “The Dybbuk” (1937), one of the most celebrated works of classic Yiddish cinema. Directed by Michał Waszyński, with choreography by Judith Berg and performances by Lilli Liliana, Leon Liebgold, and Abraham Morewski, this film was made in Warsaw, Poland, shortly before the Second World War.

Drawing on the rich traditions of Yiddish folklore, “The Dybbuk” invites us into a world shaped by spiritual beliefs, communal expectations, love, and loss. The film offers a window into the religious imagination and cultural life of Eastern European Jewish communities before the Holocaust.

Join instructor Henry Morris for a thoughtful discussion of the film’s story, symbolism, and lasting cultural significance. How do folklore and film preserve a world that history has profoundly changed?

This is the final discussion in our three-part classic Yiddish film series, part of “Yiddish: A Living Legacy,” Temple Ohabei Shalom’s year-long celebration of Yiddish language, literature, history, and culture.

Watch the film at home before the discussion. Registrants will receive a YouTube link and questions to guide their viewing. The film has English subtitles, and newcomers to Yiddish cinema are warmly welcome.
