Before “Fiddler on the Roof” became a Broadway classic, Sholem Aleichem’s beloved Tevye the milkman was already a central figure in Yiddish literature and cinema.

Join instructor Henry Morris for a discussion of “Tevye” (1939), based on Sholem Aleichem’s celebrated stories. Filmed in New York, the movie was written, directed by, and stars Maurice Schwartz, founder of the renowned Yiddish Art Theatre. Through Tevye’s story, we’ll explore the tensions between tradition and change, parents and children, and the challenges of preserving cultural identity across generations.

How do these themes resonate with Jewish life today? Part of the three-film discussion series within “Yiddish: A Living Legacy,” this program offers an opportunity to encounter the language, stories, and cultural world of Yiddish cinema in the years before World War II.

Watch the film at home before the discussion. Registrants will receive a YouTube link and questions for reflection. The film has English subtitles, and all are welcome, whether or not they speak Yiddish or attended the first discussion.
