Step into the vibrant world of Yiddish cinema with “Yidl with a Fiddle,” a beloved 1936 musical starring Molly Picon, featuring songs by Abraham Ellstein and Itzik Manger, and filmed in Kazimierz, Poland.

The 1930s marked the heyday of Yiddish cinema, when millions of Yiddish speakers lived in Jewish communities around the world. These films offer a remarkable glimpse into Jewish life, language, music, and culture in the years just before the Holocaust. Join instructor Henry Morris for a lively discussion of “Yidl with a Fiddle,” exploring the film’s characters, music, humor, and the world it captures.

What can this musical tell us about the hopes, relationships, and everyday experiences of Yiddish-speaking communities?

Watch the film at home before the discussion. Registrants will receive a YouTube viewing link and accompanying questions to consider. The film has English subtitles, and no knowledge of Yiddish is required.

This program is part of “Yiddish: A Living Legacy,” Temple Ohabei Shalom’s year-long celebration of Yiddish language and culture, and the first of three classic Yiddish film discussions with Henry Morris.

Registration and Sunday B’yachad

The discussion takes place during Sunday B’yachad, a community morning of learning, conversation, and connection at Temple Ohabei Shalom. You’re welcome to attend just the film discussion or stay afterward for our noon Bagel Brunch, where the conversation and community continue. You do not need to participate in the other morning activities.
