Join Tara Ison at the Brookline Booksmith as she reads from her new novel, “At the Hour Between Dog and Wolf,” the story of a young Jewish girl living in hiding in World War II Vichy France.

“At the Hour Between Dog and Wolf” is about Danielle, a 12-year-old Jewish girl in France, who in the early days of World War II is forced to take on the identity of a Catholic orphan just at the period of adolescence when identity itself is such a fragile construct. By the end of the novel, she has become “lost” in this false identity, transforming into a strict Catholic, and an antisemitic fascist; the intention is to show how this psychological shift can happen under the influence of extremist ideologies. The author didn’t set out to write a political novel, but the topic is disturbingly and unfortunately timely.

The reviews have been outstanding, including a star from Kirkus. The Jewish Book Council named it “Recommended Reading, Winter 2023,” and PEOPLE magazine just called it: “Brilliant, timely and chilling.”
