Registration is now open for Jewish Identity and the Land of Israel

This course focuses on key questions regarding the relationship of Jews, and the Jewish community, to the land, and state, of Israel.  Using a “then and now” approach, we will explore foundational writings such as the Tanakh, and Talmud, along with other historical sources, in conjunction with an examination of current issues and events.  For example, for our “Boundaries and Geography” session, we will study the boundaries as articulated in the Hebrew Bible, along with other data from the Biblical and Second Temple periods when the land was in Jewish hands. At the same time, we will consider the boundaries of Israel since the British Mandate and 1948 in conjunction with the recent discourse and debate around boundaries and geography. Other topics include “Covenant, Promise, and Vision,” “Possession and Ownership,” “Sacred Space, Sacred Ground,” “Trauma of Exile,” “Liturgy and Aspiration,” “Diaspora,” and “Military Ethics.”
