Modern Jewish Thought

In this class we will explore trends and themes in modern Jewish philosophy, theology and political thought. We will begin with the eighteenth century and end in the twenty – first century. We will read thinkers like Moses Mendelssohn, Franz Rosenzweig, and Martin Buber, discuss the early Zionist movement as it unfolded in Europe, and explore the effects of the Holocaust on Jewish theology and politics. Finally, we will investigate some compelling contemporary Jewish theologies and consider its connections to the ideas of the past.
