Before you think about having kids or expanding your family, find out what’s in your genes. People of Jewish descent have at least a 1 in 3 risk of being a carrier for one or more inherited diseases. People of mixed backgrounds and interfaith couples are also at risk. Getting screened or updating your genetic screening allows for reproductive options that can prevent these diseases.

On Tuesday, November 1, preconception counseling and screening (by saliva sample) will be available at the Leventhal-Sidman Jewish Community Center (333 Nahanton Street ) in Newton to individuals and couples who are interested in learning crucial information regarding their reproductive risks. From 5:30-9:30pm, genetics professionals will provide counseling and carrier screening to allow couples to make informed reproductive decisions. Screening will be provided for more than 100 genetic conditions.

The cost is $149 for anyone with health insurance. To reserve a spot for genetic counseling and screening, please register for a kit at JScreen.org and select ‘Newton JCC’ from the ‘how did you hear about us’ dropdown menu.

Walk-ins are welcome. Please do not eat, drink or smoke 30 minutes prior to screening. Co-sponsored by Boston Medical Center Division of Genetics.
