"Janis Ian: Breaking Silence" (Promotional still)

Join Hebrew College, Keshet, and The Jewish Women’s Archive for a screening of “Janis Ian: Breaking Silence,” a documentary that chronicles the singer-songwriter’s multi-decade career producing work that celebrates the humanity we share across lines of difference. The screening will feature a conversation with the film’s co-writer and executive producer Pierre Hauser.

As a teenager in the mid-1960s, Janis Ian scored a hit (“Society’s Child,” 1966) about an interracial relationship. The song launched her illustrious career but also ignited controversy, plunging Ian into an emotional tailspin, only to emerge from the ashes with an even bigger hit (“At Seventeen,” 1975) about body shaming. For the next six decades, Janis overcame homophobia, record industry misogyny, and a life-threatening illness to produce an indelible body of work that continues to draw large audiences around the globe.

“Janis Ian: Breaking Silence” chronicles the life, music, and times of the maverick singer-songwriter, beginning with her teen years as a precocious member of the vibrant Greenwich Village folk scene before ascending to international stardom in the mid-1970s and cementing her place as a voice for outsiders everywhere. Her notable work has earned her an honored place in folk and pop music history.

The documentary features interviews with Ian’s extraordinary community of friends and collaborators, including folk luminaries Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, and Tom Paxton, as well as Hollywood greats Lily Tomlin, Jean Smart, and Laurie Metcalf. While she embraces her Jewish upbringing, upholds feminist values, and advocates for LGBTQ+ rights, Janis Ian’s story and music transcends the boundaries that divide us, a testament to our shared humanity.

This event is supported by the Miller Center for Interreligious Learning and Leadership and the Hebrew College Arts Initiative.
