Have you ever had Iraqi dumplings? Iraqis, especially Iraqi Jews, are known for their kubba—soft semolina-wrapped meat dumplings, which are cooked into a variety of soups and stews. This December, Awafi Boston‘s Shemie cousins will be serving kubba at a pop-up dinner event. We will be serving hand-rolled kubba dumplings, served in a tomato and beet based stew. There will be a vegetarian option.

Alongside our kubba dinner will be an assortment of mezze-style appetizers, handmade Iraqi pastries, and timin—Iraqi rice. Influenced by Persian cuisine, our rice is slow cooked until it forms a crunchy brown crust (hkaka). Right before dinner is ready, we flip it over and serve it like a cake.

There will be two separate seatings, one with service starting promptly at 6 p.m., and one starting at 8 p.m. We expect the first seating to wrap up between 7:30-7:45 p.m. and the second seating to wrap up around 9:30-9:45 p.m.

Purchase of one ticket* buys a seat at the table for a multi-course Iraqi-Jewish meal. Seating will be family style. Sit with friends and family, but be prepared to share food and conversation with neighbors.

If you have any questions, or are interested in collaborating, email us at awafiboston@gmail.com.

*If the price of the ticket is a barrier to attending this event, please contact us. We are committed to making this food accessible, especially to those who share our heritage and an interest in retracing their roots through food.
