Austrian Galicia (1772–1918) once spanned parts of today’s Poland and Ukraine. Andrew Zalewski’s story covers centuries of Jewish history in the region, before and after Galicia existed.
Large cities, small towns, and tiny farming villages are the tale’s backdrop. In them, people from a variety of ethnic groups lived alongside a large community of Israelites.
Dr. Zalewski illustrates his talk with archival pictures of Galicia, genealogical findings, and old maps of Galicia.
Dr. Zalewski is a cardiologist who has researched his Galician families and published two books on Galicia. Dr. Zalewski received his MD and PhD from Warsaw Medical School in Poland. In his two books—Galician Portraits: In Search of Jewish Roots and Galician Trails: The Forgotten Story of One Family—he writes about distant times and the amazing details he discovered about his family and the people of Galicia.
