Youth Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour certification course through the National Council of Behavioral Health designed to introduce youth professionals, parents, caregivers, teachers, school staff, neighbors and other caring citizens to the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents.
This training builds an understanding of the importance of early intervention and teaches individuals how to help adolescents in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge. Mental Health First Aid uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis, select intervention, provide initial help and connect young people to professional, peer, social and self-help. The course teaches participants the risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents, including anxiety, depression, psychosis, eating disorders, ADHD, disruptive behavior disorders and substance use disorders.
This training from CJP will provide Jewish framing, risk and protective factors embedded in our own communities, and all scenarios will be applicable to those working in Jewish youth settings.
This is a certificate program. Participants do not learn to diagnose, nor how to provide any therapy or counseling; rather, participants learn to support youth developing signs and symptoms of mental illness or in an emotional crisis by applying a core five-step action plan.
Training begins with a 2-hour self-paced program that you can do online at your leisure. Participants in the training need to have completed this 2-hour training before joining the in-person program. The in-person training lasts for 6 hours, including a lunch break, with other classmates in the program. After you complete the training, you will become certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid.
This training will be facilitated by Rachel Schein, Psy.D., HSP. This program has a limited capacity and we will open a waitlist if needed. Priority will be given to professionals working with teens at CJP partner organizations.
